  1. bring awareness to the Gender wage gap Jennifer Jimenez

  2. Did you know… According to Linda D. Hallman, executive director of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), she states that in 2011, women only made 77 percent of every dollar men make. A gap of 73 percent. (Hallman)

  3. Women have fought for equality for decades now. They had to fight for equality and rights, which were traditionally only accorded to men. Women have fought for liberation, freedom, education, right to vote, and the right to serve in the military. While all these things were handed to men as soon as they were born, women had to fight for them. It’s important to bring awareness to this topic and educate the youth about what is going on. Today my argument is to bring awareness and why the gender wage gap needs to stop. My argument…

  4. Why bring attention to the issue? According to the article Why is it important to tackle the gender pay gap? by the Directorate-General for Justice, Women have played an important role in the employment and economic growth and their skills and talent are necessary for the economic and social development of our societies. However, this is not reflected in their pay and position in the labor market. The undervaluing of women's work is a lost resource for the economy and for society at large. (Insight: Market Talk Archives)

  5. Counter-Arguments • It’s not about discrimination • It doesn’t exist • Men are far more likely to work in higher-paying fields and occupations (by choice). Steven Tobak lists eight reasons why the gender wage gap is a “total sham” in his article 8 Reasons Why The "Gender Pay Gap" Is A Total Sham. These are some that are listed in his article: (Reporter)

  6. It’s illegal • Families can’t afford the gender wage gap • It’s unfair! Three reasons why

  7. It’s illegal According to Infoplease.com in their article The Wage Gap, the Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963, making it illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women who hold the same job and do the same work. At the time of the EPA's passage, women earned just 58 cents for every dollar earned by men. By 2010, that rate had increased to 77 cents. Though it’s illegal, it’s still happening till this day.

  8. Families cannot afford the gender wage gap Women are a crucial part of today’s workforce. Two-thirds of American families with children now rely on a woman’s earnings for a significant portion of their family’s income. The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation changes Everything, which was released last fall, identified areas where American institutions have and haven’t caught up with the realities of today’s workforce. Women are increasingly becoming their family’s breadwinner and recognizing the importance of women’s earnings to family well-being is the key piece to understanding why we are in a transformational moment

  9. It’s Unfair! Are women in the workplace worth £10,060 less than men? This pay disparity is unfair, sexist and something that needs to be addressed urgently, says Ann Francke of the Chartered Management Institute. Statistics show for full-time, year-round workers, median earnings for women were 78.2 percent of men’s median earnings, or $35,549 compared with $45,485. In 2008, the ratio of women’s to men’s median earnings was 77.2 percent. You tell me, does this sound fair? (Murphy)

  10. Wage Gap in the United States (Rampell)

  11. conclusion Although enforcement of the Equal Pay Act as well as other civil rights laws has helped to narrow the wage gap over time, it is critical for women and their families that the significant pay differences that remain are addressed. It’s important that women get educated about this issue at a early age because we as a whole can make a difference and change the future for ourselves.
