Ping Pong Paddles By Quay Sobotka
What is a Ping Pong Paddle • Ping pong is also called Table Tennis • It is used by players in the game table tennis. The paddle is made from laminated wood covered with rubber on one or two sides depending on the grip of the player. This is called either a paddle or bat depending on where in the world the game is being played. In the USA the term "paddle" is common, in Europe the term is "bat," and the official International Table Tennis Federation term is "racquet."
What trees are used for ping pong paddles? • There are two types of trees that the Japanese use to make ping pong “blades”, another name for a paddle. • The Hinoki Tree - is considered the "golden" wood of blades. It is also called "false cypress." As far as blade making goes, hinoki has the property of being very soft with a nice soft touch in short, but very fast when hitting. The biggest drawback is probably weight, that is apart from it's scarcity and cost.
What tree are used to make Ping Pong Paddles • The Cypress tree • cheap and readily available • Such trees used in America to make paddles are… • Ayous, Ash, and variations of pines
How It’s Made • First cut some blanks out of 1/8th-inch, three-ply Baltic Birch plywood. These form the core of the blade. Really flat, really clean plywood works best. • Then use a band saw to cut a void into the blanks. • Then cut pieces of 1/8 balsa to go on the inside of the void.
How It’s Made • The balsa bits went into the voids. Give each one a number, which goes on the blank and on a bit of paper that goes with the paddle during the production process. • Waterproof wood glue between the joints, and 2 sheets of wax paper in between each blank.
How its made • Once the cores are dry, with veneers and/or plywood applied to each side, set on the handles. • Then, shape the handle ends with a band saw, followed by a belt sander, followed by hand finishing. Do this BEFORE you glue.
How It’s Made • Then band saw it into a general “paddle” shape, and gradually get more specific. try to go as slowly as possible when shaping the paddles, because you only get one chance to cut. • Then, sand the paddles into their final overall shape using a sanding drum and a drill press. • Then, each handle gets a bit of doweling. Saw the excess off by hand. • Then you have the finished product!
Feel like playin pong? • Ping Pong of course! • But your out of paddles? • Just head on down to any sports store • For Example: Dick’s sporting goods, and Dunham’s Sports
Alternatives? • Yes, you can buy plastic ping pong paddles • On the up side they are a lot cheaper, but on the down side they are terrible for actually playing Ping Pong • Just look how bad this looks compared to the background.
