Purposes • Mission • Spread Christianity to the American Indians & teach the Spanish way of life. • Missions introduced livestock, fruits, vegetables and industry into the Texas region. • Settlement • Provided products & services to missions & presidios. • Presidios • protected the missions and guarded the land around to be sure there weren't any invasions.

  4. Mission life • Every day started with prayer • Breakfast • Children attend school (including classes in religion) • Women wove cloth, molded pottery, and cooked • Men worked in the fields, learned carpentry, or blacksmithing • Supper • Religion classes for the adults • Prayers

Father Damián Massanet • In 1689, he and Alonso de Leon found the remains of Fort St. Louis. • Spain out of fear of French gaining control of Texas gave Massanet permission to set up missions. • Established the first Spanish mission in East Texas in 1690 named San Francisco de los Tejas. • In 1693, out of fear of an Indian attack, the priests burned the mission to the ground.

  7. José de Escandón • He is known as the colonizer and first governor of the colony of Nuevo Santander. • He founded over twenty towns or villas and a number of missions in the colony such as Laredo, Dolores, & Mier • He is called the "father" of the lower Rio Grande valley.

  8. Antonio Margil de Jesús • Founded missions in San Antonio: San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in 1720. • They were most successful of all Texas missions. • Also helped found Nuestra Senora de los Dolores & San Miguel de los Adaes.

Francisco Hidalgo • Founded the mission San Juan Bautista in 1700 & Nuestra Padre San Francisco de los Tejas in 1716. • Asked the French for help in reestablishing missions in east Texas. • His letter to the French & St. Denis appearance led to the permanent European occupation of Texas in 1716.
