  1. Forgiveness & Justice A Picking Cotton Webquest

  2. You are On a Quest…

  3. Four Forms of Information Websites or Internet Books Journals Multimedia

  4. Instructions

  5. Internet sites – not database or journal articles Internet sites are most problematic for checking authority and currency – two issues for any information you need. Using these texts, decide if any of them are current or accurate enough for your project. The following 2 page contains two links to check. 1. What questions should you ask? 2. How would you cite the one you picked

  6. Internet sites – not database or journal articles Partners in Restorative Justice Building Compassionate Responses You need a local restorative justice center with current description of services. Explain in 1-2 sentences why you picked or didn’t pick any of these

  7. Internet sites – not database or journal articles http://www.bcrj.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restorative_justice Check the ending of the URL You know that .org sites are probably better than .com sites. These sites are hidden but they both have the.org at the end of the URL. Which is best? Why or why not http://www.iirp.org/

  8. Internet sites – not database or journal articles Many scholarly books used in academic settings contain a bibliography or links to websites Popular trade books, such as this, also have acknowledgements, although not in bibliographic form. Carefully look over this book and identify any sites it might recommend. Write them down and check them out using our two criteria: accuracy and ending of URL. Your thoughts about your discoveries in 1-2 sentences. If you were writing a 5-10 page paper would these sites be enough?

  9. Databases & their journals Academic Search Premier Where do you find general articles about restorative justice and where do you find specialized research? Should you care? This slide is about the journals If you click on the picture, you will see the source where the journal article is located. Look at the number of pages, the amount of information given about the article and try to decide which one is more scholarly before clicking on the record. Criminal Justice Abstracts

  10. Databases & their journals:Keywords needed Use these terms to help look two articles as instructed on the next slide Finding more terms. Restorative justice misses many terms you could use. Go to the Online Encyclopedia of Social Work And to vol. 3 of the Encyclopedia of Criminology (p. 1430) HV6017.E5295 2005 What terms do find there that will also work.

  11. Databases & their journals Criminal Justice Abstracts and Academic Search Premier are both supplied to us by EbscoHost company. Go to the Academic Search Premier page, The same search for “restorative Justice” shows the difference in the number of articles

  12. Databases & their journals Citing Articles can be easier than you think. Look for a citation cue in the full record in EbscoHost. WARNING – Danger Will Robinson – Some formats given by database companies still miss the mark and you can check your handbook for corrections. Pick one article and copy/paste a citation format for APA and MLA. Circle the places the database misses the mark in each.

  13. Databases & their journals Here are more selections of databases which have thousands of articles for you. Take a look and quickly identify which one you would use for religious aspects of restorative justice? Running a company specializing in restorative justice materials? Treatment of mental disorders of victims of violence? ( A little tricky) You may have to go in and look The little page by each shows information.

  14. Book Resources Go to the library website Enter the text in this box. And click on GO Suppose you needed three quality books besides your text. Would you have enough. What can you do? List three waysyou might try which wouldn’t cost you anything. This is a keyword search. Try searching the same words as a subject. Are the results more or less?

  15. Using the subject heading results Locate three books written in the last 5 years. Click on this box in the upper right hand corner and choose publication date descending However, you want something even more current. Find a book and send a request to the library for purchasing the book. - (Use the LibAnswers link) You also want to have the book for your project within two weeks without going to a bookstore. How can you do that? – See the next slide…

  16. Books and Call Number At the end of your worksheet is an abbreviated bibliography of books which might work for restorative justice topics. Each bibliography has a call number based on the Library of Congress Classification tables. The organization is alpha/numerical Based on a subject area. Using the LC guide link here Which book has a call number for Law? Look for the grouping which HV8688 falls in. What topic would you expect to find if you browsed the shelf at this area? http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/

  17. Accessing books You also want to have the book for your project within two weeks without going to a bookstore. How can you do that? Click on the ways you might locate books. Obviously two are real and two imaginary, but none will work for you.

  18. Interlibrary Loan – None of the above http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPC8c3Z-c_E While this is not our library, here is how it works. For complete ILL information for our library go to here http://www.roberts.edu/library/services/circulation/ill.aspx

  19. Multimedia / you tube/and more – Introd. Pictures, videos and recordings have growing weight in scholarship, although they are not scholarly articles and should be used advisedly. You may wish to answer the question located on the sheet about this form of information after you complete the others.

  20. Multimedia What does social injustice look like? If you were to make a presentation how would you picture it? Identify three key terms and search everystockphoto.com for pictures Go to Everystockphoto.com and browse.

  21. Audiotapes The innocence project has a series of audio tapes http://www.innocenceproject.org/news/AV-Archive.php Find an audio tape to help explain your program. http://www.uis.edu/innocenceproject/cases/exonorees/jrharper/index.html

  22. Multimedia in presentations 11 ways to use images poorly in slides Extra Credit Find an image on Everystockphoto.com and create a ppt. slide using it correctly. With this quote rom the Innocence Project site use this statistic with a picture in this Quest. “There have been 258 post-conviction DNA exonerations in United States history. These stories are becoming more familiar as more innocent people gain their freedom through postconviction testing. They are not proof, however, that our system is righting itself.” http://www.innocenceproject.org/know/

  23. Congratulations You have finished the Quest. E-mail your answers to your instructor and to the reference desk at refdesk@roberts.edu. As you explore other quests this year, Remember we librarians know and study this type of information for years and we welcome your questions and comments.
