  1. Benchmarks, Modeling, Measurement Ling, Harumi, Raghu, Miron, Jignesh, Amol

  2. Energy Sustainability • What research do we need to do? • Build energy-efficient/thermal-aware systems, techniques, algorithms • What do we need to do that research? • Infrastructure support • Simulation frameworks • Workloads and Benchmarks

  3. Community Effort • Need something that the community can gather around, and build upon (e.g., iPlant, supercomputing centers) • Hardware infrastructure/Data center • Instead of small setups everywhere, consolidate and build a single shared resource • Run as a shared service that can be used by research groups everywhere • Contains heterogeneous components • Highly instrumented: energy consumption, temperature, workloads etc • Ability to suggest hardware to add • Sharing traces, workload information, monitoring tools • Make a requirement for publishing (like bio journals) • More (objectively measurable) accountability

  4. Simulation Frameworks • How to model power consumption as a function of load and temperature? • Too much variance across different hardware platforms • How to model the temperature in a data center? • Need to model cross-interference • Need to build thermal models that can capture temporal evolution models • Models should be simple enough to enable optimization

  5. Workload Benchmarking • Need to define new benchmarks: • that capture typical workloads • From Twitter workloads to Science Data Management • Not only varying data or query workloads, but also different latency requirements • have energy or temperature constraints • E.g., # of transactions per 5KW of energy • Research community can take a lead here since they are vendor-neutral and technology-agnostic
