First Lego League F.L.L • Each year the contest focuses on a different real-world topic related to the sciences. • This year’s project topic: Biomedical (combining engineering and medical) • The robotics part of the competition revolves around designing and programming Lego robots to complete all tasks in 2 ½ minutes.

  2. Thank you • The F.L.L competition in Lee’s Summit at Summit Lakes Middle School is sponsored by family and friends of Stephanie Bentele • She was the district science administrator who passed away from the flu in 2008.

  11. Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease that causes swelling, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints. By Jack P, Jack V, Bryce M, and Dawson S

  12. Causes • Exact cause is unknown • Hereditary • A marker (HLA-DR4) gives you a higher chance to get RA if you have it

  13. Symptoms • Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness; decreased range of motion: fever, fatigue and loss of energy can also occur • Swelling in pairs of joints—especially smaller ones (both hands, both ankles, etc) • Generally worse in the morning or after long rest and lack of activity • Fatigue or tiredness

  14. Treatments • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) • Corticosteroids • Methotrexate • Hydroxychloroquine

Current Research • Bim is a critical molecule that orders immune cells to self-destruct after they “attack” • It was discovered that immune cells in RA are low in Bim • To correct this, an imitation of Bim was created, called BH3 mimetic • When BH3 mimetic was inserted into RA infected mice, the bad immune cells went “BOOM”

  16. Our Solution • RASB (rheumatoid arthritis switch bot) • With be delivered through a patch • Will suck the rogue immune cells in, then switch them back to good, working immune cells, and spit them back out

  18. Causes of Childhood Leukemia • X-rays increase risk of childhood Leukemia • Radiation: forms of energy • Chemicals like tungsten and arsenic • Viruses: a disease bug • Genetics: runs in the family

  19. Treatments • Chemotherapy • Radiation treatment • Blood transfusions • Bone marrow • Transplant • Antibiotics

Symptoms • Fever • Shortness of breath • Fatigue • Frequent infections • Painless blue or purple lumps in the neck, underarm, stomach, or groin • Pain or feeling of fullness below the ribs • Paleness or pallor • Headaches • Easy bleeding or bruising • Loss of appetite • Tiny red spots under the skin • Bone or joint pain • Painless lumps that are sometimes around the eyes

  21. Current Research • Micro RNA 125b causes multiple types leukemia • Too much Btk (Bruton-tyrosine-kinase) creates leukemia cells. • Cancer killing agent: (HDACI) histone deacetylase inhibitors

CKRS Attaches to RNA and switches it off Our Solution Propels through skin and body Senses Micro RNA125b CKRS Cancer Killing RNA Switch The CKRS (or cancer killing RNA switch) goes to the microRNA125b and switches it. It can also clone HDACI (or histone deacetylase inhibitor) to kill more leukemia cells. All this put together will cure childhood leukemia.

  24. Causes • Hereditary • Occurs more often in girls than boys • A growth spurt • Occurs usually after age 10 • The back just doesn't grow as straight as it should and no one knows why

  25. SYMPTOMS • Shoulders are different heights • Head is not centered directly above pelvis • Leaning of entire body to one side • Changes in the look or texture of skin overlying the spine (dimples, color changes)

  26. Treatments • 25 degrees or less – no treatment • 25 – 30 degrees – brace • More than 45 degrees – surgery. If you have surgery your vertebrae will be fused together. • Treatments depend on how bad the curve will worsen A vertebrae

  27. Facts • Everyone between 5th and 9th grade should get checked for scoliosis by their health care provider • It is important to be checked regularly if you have a family member with Idiopathic Scoliosis

  28. Solution Our idea is to use carbon nano tubes and insert them into the body with the new robotic surgeon THE DaVINCI robot. The carbon nano tubes will form a protective shield around the spine. The protective shield will allow the spine to to move but will restrain from curving.
