  1. First Lego League F.L.L • Each year the contest focuses on a different real-world topic related to the sciences. • This year’s theme: Biomedical (solving medical problems with engineering and medicine) • The robotics part of the competition revolves around designing and programming Lego robots to complete all tasks in 2 ½ minutes.

  2. Syringe to base - 25 White blood cells to patient area - 15 Open artery walls with stint - 25 Cardiac patch in heart - 20 Black part of pacemaker in heart (NO GRAY) - 25 Set off mechanical hand - 25 Push blue and white off of medicine dispenser (leave pink) - 25 Push pressure tester - 25 Push red part of brain - 15 Open brain door - 20 People to patient area - 25 Black sides of panels facing north – 25 OR Up - 20 Repair big bone - 15 Kick ball into goal - 25 Bionic eyes touching hands/ arms of big person on mat - 20 Push small bone together/ put cast on small bone – 25 Blue and white pills to patient area - 5 Missions & Point Values

  3. Mission: Push Mechanical Hand, Pressure Tester and Medicine Dispenser

  4. Mission: Bring Syringe & Dr. to Base

  5. Mission: Insert Stint

  6. Mission: Deliver People to the Patient Area

  7. The Biomedical Project These are the steps we took • Select a topic • Research • Chose a problem to solve • Create a solution • Prepare to present our solution idea

  8. Immune system Definition for immune system: The body‘s defense system against germs like the common cold. By Mackenzie and Dakota

  9. What Weakens the Immune System? • Diseases • Cigarette smoking • Stress • Chemotherapy • Side effects of certain drugs • Too much sleep

  10. Treatments • Vitamins • Garlic • Vegetables that are red, orange and dark green • A vaccine uses a patient’s own tumor to kill some cancers

  11. New Discoveriesby Dakota and Mackenzie Perforin “the body’s assassin” Scientists have known about Perforin for a long time but just recently they've been able to see it.

  12. Definition of Perforin Perforin kills the bad cells that may cause cancer. Well, that’s what it’s supposed to do…. Perforin is also the culprit when the wrong cells are marked for elimination, either in autoimmune disease conditions, such as early onset diabetes, or rejection of bone marrow transplantation.

  13. A special chip will release nano-bots that will fix Perforin when it kills the good cells. For smaller jobs, like repairing DNA cells, the nano-bots release smaller nano-bots. Solution

  14. Depression A condition of emotion, and greater sadness By: Nick, Jake, Adam ,Matt

  15. Causes • Hereditary • Stroke • A heart attack • Cancer • Parkinson's disease • Hormonal disorders

  16. Symptoms • Sleepless nights • Feeling helpless hard to concentrate • Hard to concentrate • Irritable • Short tempered • Lost appetite/can’t stop eating • Negative thoughts • Thoughts of suicide

  17. Treatments • Antidepressants • Stress management techniques • Electroconvulsive therapy (severe) • Participation in activities • Healthy diet • Read

  18. Current Research • kinase m TOR – a protein found in the body. Too much/less causes depression • Depression causes atrophy (reduction in connections between neurons) • Drugs being used to repair neuronal connections damaged by stress

  19. Solution The Nanotank will collect and regulate kinase m TOR to stop depression. The Nanotank is contained in pill formTank holding kinase m TOR A little hard hat A camera to see A tube were the arms take out the protein arms

  20. Thank you • The F.L.L competition in Lee’s Summit at Summit Lakes Middle School is sponsored by family and friends of Stephanie Bentele • She was the district science facilitator who passed away from the flu in 2008.
