  3. What is Cognition…. Cognition is LEARNING or acquiring knowledge to be reused in the future. Once you have learned something it is called: Prior Knowledge

  4. What does cognition look like? Signal Words Identify Describe Explain Analyze Synthesize Infer • Predict • Draw Conclusions • Compare/contrast • Cause/effect • Categorize You use these words when you are trying to understand new things.

  5. On homework you might see… C.Q.S. What is the meaning of… What evidence is there to support… Can it be inferred that…. What predictions can be made… Cognitive Question Starters • Cognitive Assignments • Vocabulary • Guided Reading • Math Worksheet • Maps • MR. HELP

  6. What is Metacognition? Using what you have learned (Cognition) to Understanding big ideas Justify your opinion Challenging opposing views

  7. What does Metacognition look like? Signal Words Confirm Understanding Make connections Develop awareness • Reflect on ideas • Think Aloud • Using predictions for new ideas. Your New Idea How were pyramids built? Ramps? Pulleys?

  8. On your homework you might see M.Q.S. Can I confirm… Do I need to pause and ponder… What other ways can I interpret.. How can I justify my belief that… Can I make the assumption that… Am I able to make connections between…and How has …made me aware of…. MetaCognitive Question Starters • Metacognitive Assignments • Comparisons Essay • Interpreting Primary Sources • Citation of Sources as Proof

  9. Noticing Your Thinking “I’m Bored”-Not Focused “I wish he would stop talking” Focusing on Reading “I got lost when…” “I’m confused because…” Taking Charge of Reading “I’m going to look at heading first” “How do I figure out what this word means” Deep Knowledge of Subject Area “Whose point of view is this?” “Is this source accurate or invalid?”

  10. How does MQS look in the book with an assignment?? Open your book to pg. 7 ~ Analyze/Read the page. Question #1 What other ways can I interpret this map? This map could also show that the Romans controlled the Entire Mediterranean Sea. Question #2 Can I confirm that this map shows trade routes? Yes, this map shows trade routes because it show roads. It only makes sense that if the Romans used roads to move armies and settlers, that they would also use them to move goods throughout the Empire. This is NOT a Yes or No Question!!!!

Yes, the fact that Greece had colonies throughout the Mediterranean, as seen on the map, shows that Greece had influence in a large area. They wouldn’t be able to protect these areas if they weren’t powerful in some way. This is NOT a Yes or No Question!!!! Your answer needs to be convincing! Question #4 I can make the assumption that… the Greeks traveled throughout the Mediterranean Sea trading goods and spreading their culture to other civilizations.

  12. I.D.E. How do you write an answer to a short answer question? How do you construct a response? You will now use the Action Words…

  13. What does I.D.E. stand for? • Identify • Describe • Explain

  14. I.D.E. • IDE is used to answer short answer questions. • Short answer questions are called constructed response questions…..

  15. I.D.E. ….because IDE is used to “build” an answer. • We “construct” an answer.

  16. What is the first step in construction? • To build a firm foundation. • Firm foundation = a STEM RESPONSE

  17. Identify • Very easy! • Identify meanstoname something. • You can do this in one sentence. • You MUST use a Stem Response. • Rewrite the question in the answer! • You do this when you name one: • cause • change • feature or place

  18. Identify Example #1 • Identify this map. • This is a Robinson map One sentence Stem Response Named it

  19. Identify Example #2 • Identify a geographic feature shared by ALL the states in Region 2: • One geographic feature shared by all the states in Region 2 is the Great Lakes. Stem Response, named it in one sentence

  20. Describe • Harder • Describe means totell about something! • You MUST use a Stem Response and Complete Sentences • You will need to write4 or 5 sentences. • You need to use the following words: • WHO • WHAT (Identify) • WHERE • WHEN

  21. Describe: Describe the Michigan State – Michigan game.

  22. What? • A college football game. • Who? • The Michigan State University Spartans will play the University of Michigan Wolverines. • Where? • They will play at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. • When? • The game will be played on Saturday, October 21, 2012 at TBA.

  26. Explain • Explain means to give the facts that support your position. • You MUST use a Stem Response and Complete Sentences. • You must explain by using the words: • Why and How • You will need to write2 or 3sentences. • Explain is usually combined with describe.

  27. Explain Example #1 • Explain why fruits are grown in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. • There are several reasons why fruits are grown in the Lower Peninsula. (1) The Lower Peninsula has adequate rainfall and fertile soil. (2) The growing season is long enough for fruits to grow. (3) The land is flat, so fruits are easy to plant and harvest with farm machines. (4) The lower Peninsula also has a good highway system connecting its farms to cities. These highways allow farmers to send their fresh fruit to markets where they can be sold. Stem Response 1,2,3,4 are facts that support!

  28. Explain Example #2 • Explain why Michigan is economically important to the U.S. • We need a stem response. • Think about the words why and how Michigan is economically important to the U.S.
