Cy DeCosse, born in Valley City, ND in 1929, is a visionary photographer who fell in love with the medium while studying in Florence. After a hiatus to work in advertising, he returned to photography in 1994. Self-taught with a unique approach, he specializes in close-ups and complex printing techniques like Platinum and gum dichromate printing, which lend his work brilliant colors and rich textures. His art often explores similarities and differences in natural forms, emphasizing contrast and balance, showcasing the beauty of both flowers and abstract elements.

Biographical Info • Born in Valley City, ND, 1929 • Built his own darkroom • Minneapolis College of Art and Design 1952 • Scholarship to study in Florence- Renzo Maggini • Fell in love with photography • Worked for advertising company in Minnesota • Returned to photography in 1994 when company was sold
More about his art • Received very little formal training • Shoots mostly close ups • Did a lot of Platinum Printing – lots of grays • Brought back gum dichromate printing- color prints • Very difficult method of printing • Produces brilliant colors

Blue Lotus of the Nile • Differences: • No water (waves) • Mine does not have reflection vertically mine has it horizontally fanned lines on top/box • Mine is primarily Red vs His is Blue • Electrical Ammeter vs a floating flower • Similarities: • Horizontal Horizon line separating reality from reflection • Both represent Balance • Both are Color photos • Both have fanned lines in bottom half from a central point

Four Flag Poles • Background is: Ocean vs. Sky • Perspective (Depth) • Glimmer on ocean • Contrast • Shades of blue • Number of lines • I looked up at overhead wires attached to a high tension pole • Waves in vertical lines are created naturally mine I created by manipulating the straight lines with Photoshop • Get weaker near bottom • Repetition • Balance
