  3. WEATHERING STEEL TORONTO, CANADA 2002 The house sits at the crest of a wide wooded ravine. One of several that slice through the eastern edge of the city

  4. WEATHERING STEEL The architect made this home for a young family with two children. PLAN

  6. WEATHERING STEEL One front of the house, the architects excavated the ground around the children’s playroom, their parents gym, and service wing to create a light court that bright what could otherwise have remained a dark basement.

  7. WEATHERING STEEL Inside, architects manipulated the floor plan to create up and down movement, as if traversing the topography of a natural landscape, a strategy that further ties the architecture to its site

  8. TUBAC HOUSE RICK JOY ARCHITECTS TUBAC, ARIZONA, US The gravel path to the house crunches beneath your feet. Through the garden of barrel cactuses that appear to be standing guard,one descends into a courtyard by way of a stair wedged between the two retaining walls.

  12. TUBAC HOUSE The architect gives his client the equivalent of an outdoor living room, a great open-air porch adjoining the black granite swimming pool at the edge of a terrace.

  13. TUBAC HOUSE Inside, polished materials in s cool netural palette contrast with the aggressive exterior. Architect selected waxed concrete floors, maple cabinetry, a stainless steel kitchen, plaster walls, and a combination of clear and translucent glass that modulates view and light throughout the house.

  16. FLATZ HOUSE Architect used pale concrete with a golden tint to construct the stacked, overlapping boxes that comprise the starkly minimalist house.

  17. FLATZ The entrance to the L-shaped main level, which houses shared living spaces, is along a flight of exterior stairs to the right of garage.
