  2. Peru is best known for Machu Picchu and its neighboring city of Cuzco. But Peru has much more to offer than just Machu Picchu (although Machu Picchu is a remarkable destination and well worth a visit). Here are several places in Peru that you should consider visiting on your next South America tour.

  3. Arequipa. • Arequipa is a southern colonial city surrounded by Peru's canyon country. Not only is it a beautiful city full of buildings built from a lovely white stone, there are several great attractions right inside the city itself. The Santa Catalina Monastery has been in operation since the 1500s and covers and entire city block. Most of it is open to the public and its colorful walls and hidden rooms makes for an enchanting afternoon. Another great place to visit is the museum with Juanita the Ice Mummy, one of the best preserved ancient remains found inside Peru. The food of Arequipa is also an attraction in itself, as it tends to be spicier than other Peruvian dishes and the local are very proud of it.

  4. Huaraz. • This mountain town is far off the typicals tourist's radar, but if you're into hiking and outdoor activities, you should put it right up there on your peru vacation itinerary. The city itself isn't very exciting, but the land surrounding it is. This is where you'll find the highest peaks in Peru and several wonderful trekking options. The Santa Cruz trek is a four day excursion worth consideration.

  5. Lake Titicaca. • If you're looking for a Peru luxury tour, you should consider visiting Lake Titicaca via a private tour and staying overnight on Isla Suasi, a private island. The only property on this island is a luxury eco-resort, so you can relax in luxury without leaving too big of an environmental footprint. In addition to the remarkable scenery, the culture in and around Lake Titicaca is remarkable. Local people continue to build and live on man-made floating islands just like their ancestors did.

  6. Iquitos. • If you have the time and the ambition, consider visiting the northern Peruvian town of Iquitos. There are no roads that connect it to the outside world, so you'll have to fly in. After checking out the town, you'll want to hop into a river boat and head up or down the Amazon River to a jungle lodge. Many South America tours include an Amazon trip, but nothing can beat being on the Amazon River itself, isolated from the outside world. This area is a wonderful place for wildlife watching and learning about native plants that have medicinal properties.
