  1. South America Luxury Tours: Machu Picchu

  2. For many years getting to Machu Picchu was considered an adventure, at first the realm of intrepid explorers such as Hiram Bingham, later the preserve of hardy backpackers who were prepared to make the long and sometimes difficult journey from Lima, to Cusco and then into the mountains along badly serviced transport routes. • Whether it's helped or not, these days are gone and Machu Picchu has been able to enjoy high investment volumes to ensure that luxury experiences and tours are possible with the likes of five star hotels and luxury train journeys. These days, experiencing the joy of Machu Picchu in style is an easy and convenient option for the discerning traveller.

  3. To get to Machu Picchu, you will probably first fly to Lima and then on to Cusco. Once you arrive, you have a few different options. The Sacred Valley has a lower altitude to Cusco, and heading their first is often considered by tourists to acclimatize. Or, you can choose to relax in Cusco, the Imperial City of the Incas. • In Cusco, you have a several luxury accommodations to choose from including the Monasterio, the Libertador, the Aranwa Boutique and the Inkaterra La Casona. La Casona is an exclusive boutique hotel with just 11 rooms so you will want to book this one early if it interests you.

  4. In the Sacred Valley, there are also a number of luxury hotels such as the Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel and Wellness, Sol y Luna and the Tambo del Inka. All of them feature spas and beautiful grounds, perfect for relaxing while you are getting used to the altitude. • To get to tours machu picchu from Cusco, there's no question that the most luxurious way to travel is the Hiram Bingham train service provided by Peru Rail. This is a true Orient Express style service which includes aperitifs, lunch, tea in the Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu and entrance into the site and more. The service is normally up and back in the same day so you may wish to request return service the following day so you can have a chance to stay overnight and visit the site again.

  5. Sanctuary Lodge right at Machu Picchu is pretty much the ultimate for luxury lodging, but heading down to Inkaterra's Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel or the Sumaq Hotel is equally worthwhile. With fine dining and spas alongside stunning rooms, this is a place to pamper yourself. With expansive grounds and trails to see birds and many different orchids, the Inkaterra is a hotel that is loved by many. • An additional note when booking luxury travel here: be sure to book private transportation as well as private tours where possible. Your trip enjoyment can be determined by both of these things. Private tours of the Cusco city attractions and the Sacred Valley allow you to hear your guide better and, often, to have a better one as well. Private transportation tends to be much more comfortable as well as safer.
