This session discusses the teaching strategies employed by educators at Youthful, focusing on their strengths and areas for improvement. Key insights highlight students' eagerness to learn and the reasonable quality of their work, alongside challenges such as a lack of analytical skills and short attention spans. Various strategies for English and Math are analyzed, and suggestions for parental support are provided. The session also addresses the irregularity of music lessons and the implications of a points system on students' stress levels.

Strategies used in the classroom • English - Highlighting of key information/words, 5W1H, Grammar drills , Wall of words • Class writing –Word Splash, teacher-modeled writing, peer/group writing, experiential writing • Math – TB, WB, HWB, WS (Heuristics and Challenging), Parallel questions, Plastered walls • Interdisciplinary approach – making sense of what is taught across different subjects
Areas of Weakness for English Writing • Lacks ‘flesh’ • Sequence of events • Vocabulary (variety and usage) Comprehension • Lifting of sentences. Answers can be more specific to answer the question • Grammatical errors Speaking • Oral skills, fluency in expressing ideas (usage of Singlish)
Areas of Weakness for Maths • Need to read the questions properly. • Need to persevere ~ when questions are too lengthy or complicated • Time management (to move on) • Model drawing ~ highlighting of key words, steps to do a problem sum ~ need to have the habit to draw models
Ways to help our children English: • Reinforce the strategies used in class • Vocabulary expansion • Oral skills, conversing • www.stellarliteracy.sg
Ways to help our children Mathematics: • Revise heuristic skills • Parallel questions • Time limit • Draw models • Highlight/Underline clues • Play Math/strategy-based games
How else can we support our children? • Homework handed in punctually • Book flood • Draw models ! • Ensure that they memorise their timetables. • Communication!
