  1. Carbon Cycle This topic just keeps coming up, over and over again

  2. The Carbon Cycle • Carbon from air turned into carbohydrates by plants. • Photosynthesis • CO2 + H2O --> C6H12O6 + O2 • Producers REMOVE carbon from air.

  3. The Carbon Cycle • Returned to the air: • Cellular Respiration • ALL organisms do this (or something very like it) • C6H12O6 + O2 --> CO2 + H2O • Decay by bacteria (who are doing cellular respiration with the “bodies”). • Fires. (Same chemical formula as cellular respiration, only faster)

  4. The Carbon Cycle Open burning Atmospheric CO2 Photosynthesis Respiration Fuel Combustion Respiration Fuel Combustion Photosynthesis Dissolved CO2 Respiration Fossil fuels

  5. The Carbon Cycle • Stored underground as fossil fuels like oil and natural gas. • Came from: • Plants that got buried a LONG time ago • Also algae that got buried in sea sediment. • Heating of limestone. • Took a LONG time to form.

  6. Coal Swamps • Peat moss and dead trees and other plants. • Periodic flooding by ocean rise buried layers of peat moss b/t layers of sediment. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLfhWVZ7k10

  7. Coal Swamps

  8. Oil • Sludge and sediment layers. • LOTS of time and heat.

  9. Seeps • Natural release of crude oil and gas. • Slow

  10. The Carbon Cycle • Carbon Dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. • used by marine organisms to make shells and coral homes • precipitates as calcium carbonate = limestone. • VERY slow process.

  11. The Carbon Cycle • It WILL end up back in the ground, but . . . • The ONLY way is to wait THOUSANDS or even MILLIONS of years for it to happen naturally.

  12. The Carbon Cycle • Releasing CO2 with: • Electric Power Plants • Vehicles • Heating and Air Conditioning
