  3. Booktalker Data • 100% response rate (18/18 people completed the survey) • Booktalkers are all Hennepin County librarians who volunteer to bring this service to the students at County Home School.

  4. How many times have you booktalked at County Home School? More than 75% of respondents have booktalked more than once.

  5. How would you describe your experience booktalking? All respondents expressed a positive experience.

  6. Booktalkers use resources in varying degrees.

Which of these is the most problematic when booktalking at CHS? • None of the above, the students were very well behaved when I went and seemed interested • I didn't have any problems with the CHS experience • Having titles that connect with the students & catching their interest with enthusiasm. • The students always behaved pretty well when I visited. • None of the above. What suggestions do you have for improving the booktalking experience at CHS? • “An ability to make title suggestions that would help with the limitations of the collection …” • “I'm not sure how likely this is, but it would be great if there were sub funds to cover the day off desk.” • “Keep having two presenters tag team.” • “Get more and more copies of interesting non-fiction ....” • “Time at work to prepare … instruction on book-talking.”

  17. if they could talk more about each book More enthusiastic and more lively to grab our attention ask us questions to make it more interesting I wouldn't change one thing; they are doing a great job more comics books and crime fiction more comic books and more drawing books talk about nonfiction books more better genres to pick from more copies of books bring a lot more books! nothing have snacks If you could change one thing about these booktalks to improve them, what would it be?

  18. how they explain what the book is about that I get books I want to read they give you enough detail so that we when to read them that the people who speak are very open and respectful they do a great job working with us they describe the book well and that makes you want to read them sometimes they come with really good books sometimes they have my interest getting to read different books no class work that day What do you like MOST about the booktalks you have seen?

  19. we're just sitting and talking and it's boring describe too much sometimes some books are boring i feel the book isn't as multi-cultural as I would like as in urban fiction waiting to get called on that the books take so long to come to me that they keep changing people who visit the limited selection putting my hand up to talk when they talk about books that are not so good their only there once in a while end of the booktalks not enough hood books i can't work on my class stuff What do you like LEAST about the booktalks you have seen?

The Students’ Perspective • The most popular books (20+ requests) all involve street life, troubled family situations, or crime. • This confirms the need to increase booktalkers’ familiarity with titles of student interest. • See also power point on books that received more than 10 student requests.

  22. Booktalkers are extraordinarily positive about their experience. Most have chosen to repeat this service. Overwhelming majority of CHS students enjoy the talks and are reading new types of books due the talk However, practical issues seem to inhibit their experience. Things to consider: Relaxing restrictions on titles & topics Having to do less prep by repeating talks and working in groups of three Better and faster ways of obtaining books (including adequate number) Providing more familiarity with books of interest for the CHS audience More snacks & breaks Takeaways …
