  2. Born in 1386 in Florence • Died in 1466 in Florence • 80 years old • Son of NiccolodiBettoBardi, who was a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild Donatello’s Life There is not much information about his life because not many documents were kept and some stories contradict each other.

  3. In Florence Donatello learned the basics of sculpting at the Stonemasons' Guild. Donatello then became an apprentice to Lorenzo Ghiberti. Donatello was working for the master on the bronze reliefs of the doors of the Florentine Baptistery. He became the master of marble, bronze, and even wood. Donatello’s Start

  7. When Donatello was aging, he carved a haunting, unhealthy Mary Magdalen from poplar wood for the Baptistery. Strange work

  8. On Donatello's death on December 13, 1466, two unfinished bronze pulpits (platforms for preaching) were left in Saint Lorenzo, Florence. On one are relief panels, showing the torture and murder of Christ Finished by his pupil Bertoldodi Giovanni, the pulpit scenes reveal the great master's insight into human suffering.
