  1. AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTCORIENTATION WELCOME TO DIXIE HIGH SCHOOL HOME of the FLYERS

  2. AEROSPACE SCIENCECOURSE • Students take a leadership role • Team work is extremely important • Col Whicker is the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) • Runs day-to-day Corps business • Teaches academic portion of the program • SMSgt Jones is the Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI) • Orders, issues and controls all uniforms and equipment • Develops and trains the Drill Teams and Color Guards

  3. LEADERSHIP CLASSES • Leadership Classes also have text books, work books and study guides • include physical training, drill and wear of the uniform • Others subjects are Customs and Courtesies, Flag Etiquette, Time Management and Leadership Skills • Practical exercises includes solving logic problems and scenarios

  4. EXPECTATIONS • Discipline, cooperation and effort • “Just enough to get by” will not cut it • Goal: prepare better citizens; help students become more knowledgeable and prepared to enter “the real world” after high school • Rules, Regulations and Reliability are going to be stressed to the limit • You must demonstrate Discipline everyday

  5. AEROSPACE SCIENCEINSTRUCTOR COURSE • Students can qualify for and receive very large scholarships through AFJROTC, depending on their GPA, ACT and physical ability • The Cadet Code says it all - You will get a copy and will be expected to memorize it “word for word”

  6. RULES AND REGULATIONS • Air Force Dress and appearance standards will be enforced Intentional disrespect of the uniform will result in disciplinary action • Grooming standards are essential: If you have to ask, “Do I need a haircut,” you do. • Starting Monday, haircuts required

  7. CADET CADRE SYSTEM • Cadre means “Cadets teaching Cadets” • AFJROTC is a course which teaches Leadership as well as Followership • Cadet Leaders will have earned the position they hold • The directions of these Leaders will be followed the same as if an Instructor • Each Leadership step has increasingly more responsibility • The higher the rank or position the greater the responsibility and expectation of that position

  8. RANK HAS IT PRIVLEGES“RHIP” • In the beginning all Cadets start life as an Airman Basic and progress up the Chain of Command based on Leadership Ability • The Group Commander is top of the pyramid for a cadet • Several of cadets will be advanced in position after a couple of weeks. These cadets will fill the leadership positions necessary to run the corps • Cadets leading and directing other cadets the same age is difficult, but necessary in ROTC

  9. DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY • New cadets to the program will be assigned a cadet as a mentor to help not only with ROTC but other classes • Tutoring is expected to help cadets having trouble in any subject. It will be up to the Cadet Education Officer to find the right person to do the tutoring

  10. THE DRILL TEAMAn Extra-Curricular Program • The Drill Team is a group of highly skilled cadets that compete in drill meets • They travel throughout this area and to other states • Often they are required stay over night • The Team sometimes has to miss school • Drill Team members get extra uniforms • Members of this team get a lot of recognition and sometimes get promoted faster

  11. I WANT TO BE ON THE DRILL TEAM • Drill Team members must “Try out” each year; Returning members are constantly evaluated • You are representing your unit, the school, Air Force Junior ROTC and the Air Force • You must have passing grades in all classes • You must exceed the requirements of non-drill team cadets in drill, discipline and appearance • You must be able to practice after school Monday through Thursday until 4:30 or as determined by the drill team instructor • Attendance at practice is essential to the success of the team

  12. How Much $ Does It Cost? • Drill Team is probably the least expensive co-curricular activity in school • Drill Team is considered a sport and can earn a drill team letter • We pay for hotels, buses, uniforms, and equipment • You pay for the food you eat, phone calls and anything extra you purchase • A two day trip would probably cost you about $20.00 for food. The breakfast is often covered with the cost of the hotel • Commercial buses are used for any trip over two hours

  13. SUMMARY • In the Leadership area, we expect a lot of effort from you • You have selected an extremely good program, one that is very much different from anything else the school has to offer • Some cadets will fail because they choose to -- If you try to the best of your ability, “YOU CAN’T FAIL THIS PROGRAM”

  14. CONCLUSION • I hope that each of you are up for the challenge, but if you have decided you can’t keep your hair cut or you can’t drill now is the time to change courses. Don’t stay in the program for two weeks and then decide you don’t like it and quit. • Good luck and be prepared to enjoy the experience of AFJROTC.
