  1. Welcome! Look at our BW for TUESday: • [3 min] Identify the parts of the quote sandwich from a student’s model, is there an introduction to quote, quote, and explanation? • Based on Scout’s conversations with Jem, the reader can infer that Jem does not think highly of girls. To prove this, in chapter 4, “I swear Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it’s mortifyin’” (Lee 38). This shows that Jem has a very negative view of girls and that he does not want his sister to act like one.

  3. Constructed response • [8 min] Paper Pass • Trade your paper with someone at your table. • Check that they have followed the structure correctly. There should be an inference, a quote to prove the point, and an explanation of the quote. • Sign your name if the person has met all requirements. • Return to owner. Double check response and turn in the blue box.

  4. Theme = the underlying meaning • Loss of Innocence/Coming of Age • The character grows up and loses his or her childlike ways of seeing things. This may mean taking on new responsibilities or realizing that something isn’t as important as it once was. It often involves entering a new phase of understanding and learning new skills. • It often involves a new understanding of the nature of humanity and its potential for good or evil.
