  2. Tuesday, September 4, 2012 • Opening: What do you think has been the funniest or weirdest thing in Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key so far? • Describe it in your composition notebook. The teacher will hand them out. • Write a topic sentence • “The funniest thing so far in Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is …” • Write at least 3 sentences describing what’s so funny • Write a concluding sentence • “This scene is ridiculous, but it makes me want to read on to find out what happens to poor Joey.” • “Joey getting into trouble this way is laugh-out-loud funny and shows what troubles Joey has going by the rules.” • Or write your own

  3. Joey Pigza, Chapter 3 • Read Chapter 3, page 17-29. • Focus on: • what he does to get in trouble, which leads to Joey taking meds • how the meds affect him. • Make at least 2 entries on your Joey Foldable. • (You now have a total of 10 entries)

Short Story Elements: Cornell Notes • In the Red Literature book under your desk, turn to page 26. • The “Topic” of your Cornell Notes is “Short Story Elements” • Write down the definition of the following terms: • Plot • Exposition • Rising Action • Climax • Falling Action • Resolution • Summarize your notes in three to four sentences in the “Summary” section. • On the back of your Cornell Notes, draw the “Plot at a Glance” diagram. (Another simpler version of this is on page 39. You may draw this one.) • Read “The Dinner Party” on pages 28-29 and answer the 7 questions in the right-hand margin. Either copy the questions or write complete sentences.

  5. Informational Reading • Red Literature book, pages 874-880 • Read “What Do You Know About Sharks?” • Take Cornell Notes on the entire article • Write orange questions from book on left side of your Cornell notes • Include many facts on the right side of your Cornell notes • Answer #1-3, page 881 on back of Cornell note sheet or own paper • Complete Vocabulary Practice. Answer with a complete sentence.
