  5. Italy and the EU The European Union (EU) is a group of countries trying to work together for peace and prosperity. The aims are: - help people earn enough money and get treated fairly - by working as a group the EU hopes that Europe will be listened to more by other countries - help Europeans to live in peace, without the threat of war. - make laws that protect people’s rights in the member countries. It helps Italy by: • Helping unemployment in EU countries with training opportunities funded by the European union. • Encourages trade between EU countries so that members from the EU countries benefit by selling their products. • Promotes the development and economic prospect of the member countries. • Members of the EU provide economic security for all members by paying taxes to the EU. • The EU can provide physical and monetary aid when natural disasters strike. • The EU provides food and energy security to member states making it easier for EU countries who are unable to produce enough food or energy.

  6. Flooding in Venice Venice is at increasing risk of flooding because of: • Land sinking due to the weight of the buildings • Rising sea levels – global warming • More storm events ‘acquaalta’ – also due to global warming

  8. Volcanoes in Italy • Make sure you can explain how volcanoes are created on destructive plate boundaries (look back at the work you did in September). • Also, make sure you know the list of reasons why people live near volcanoes.
