  2. Early Life • Al Capone was born on January 17th, 1899 in New York • He was the child of Italian immigrants • Became involved in gang activity after getting kicked our of school at the age of 14 • Started using and dealing cocaine

  3. Early 20s • Moved to Chicago • Started smuggling alcohol during prohibition (A time period where alcohol was illegal) • Bribed government figures • Took part as a pimp

  4. Later Life • He was supposedly involved in the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre (the genocide of rival gang members) • Highly visible public figure • Sent to Alcatraz for tax evasion (11 year sentence) • Suffered from mental and physical deterioration (due to neurosyphilis, a disease of the central nervous system, that he contracted as a child) • Died in Alcatraz at the age of 48 of cardiac arrest after suffering a stroke

  5. So, Good…Or Bad? Most people think Al Capone was bad. We don’t.

Good Side • Al Capone was known as the “modern-day Robin Hood” of his time • Most of the profits he made from bootlegging, prostitution, etc. went to the people of Chicago • Was a family man • Was a gentleman and dressed well; even attended high-class parties • Gave help to anyone who needed it, even rivals

  7. Bad Side • Committed crimes for money • Got into a lot of gang fights • Did cocaine • Violent when drunk or high on cocaine

  8. So what do you think? GOOD? EVIL?
