  2. Family life • Fourth of nine children • Grew up in Brooklyn • Father was a barber • Mother was a stay at home mom • Tight knit Italian Family • Married Mae in in 1918

School/ Early jobs • quit school in 6th grade at the age of 14 • Was a member of two kid gangs when he was younger • Worked three jobs as kid • Clerk in Candy Store • Pin Boy in bowling alley • Cutter in book bindery • Later became part of Five Points gang • Worked three new jobs • Harvard Inn • Bouncer • Bartender

  4. Nickname • Scarface • While working at Harvard Inn he was attacked by the brother of a patron whom Capone insulted

  5. Crimes • Frist arrest • Disorderly conduct while working for Frankie Yale, a ganagster • Murdered two people in New York but was never tried because no one would say they heard anything due to gangland ettiquette • After hospitalizing a rival gang was sent to Chicago to work for Yale’s old mentor • Controlled speakesies, bookie joints, gambling houses, borthels, horse and race tracks, night clubs, and breweries. • Reported income of $100,000,000 • Chicago Mayor hired new police chief to run Capone out of town

  6. St valentines day massacre • February 14th, 1929 • 4 of Capone’s men entered a garage dressed as policemen • 7 people in garage • 6 members of rival gang • Dropped weapons when they saw uniforms • Capone’s men fired more than 150 shots and killed them all

  7. Different side of Capone • Was loyal and generous • Opened soup kitchens after stock crash • Ordered merchants to give clothes to the needy on his expense • Treated people fairly

Prison • Served first prison sentence in May 1929 • Was for carrying a gun • Ten years in federal prison and One in county jail • Indicted for tax invasion from 1925-29 • Misdemeanor of failing to file tax returns from 1928 and 29 • Conspiracy to violate prohinition laws from 1922-31 • Became too powerful in Atlanta and was sent to Alcatraz

  9. Alcatraz • Wasn’t able to control anything • Security was too tight • He had no knowledge of the outside world • Became an ideal prisoner to try and earn time off for good behavior • Exhibited signs of syphilitic dimentia and spent the rest of his sentence in the hospital

  10. Death • Died on January 25th, 1947

  11. Social conflict • I believe Al Capone is a result of the Social Conflict theory. He grew up having a nice child hood and didn’t have any problems with his family. I chose social conflict because he had a great need for power. He always had power whether it was with gangs or even when he was in jail. While he was in jail he became in supreme power which made him have to change prions. He controlled people so he didn’t have to be around while the killing was happening and he always had an alibi.
