  2. Martin Luther’s Early Life • Martin Luther was born into a world dominated by the Catholic Church, which held spiritual control over all the nations of Europe. For the keenly spiritual Luther, the Church's promise of salvation was irresistible • Luther was caught in a thunderstorm and terrified by the possibility of imminent death, he vows to become a monk.

  3. Martin Luther Has Doubts • After entering the monastery, Luther becomes increasingly doubtful that the Church can actually offer him salvation at all. His views crystallize even further with a trip to Rome, where he finds that the capital of Catholicism is swamped in corruption. • After much thought Luther comes to the following conclusion: his own individual faith will guarantee his salvation NOT the Church and it’s indulgences. • What are indulgences you ask?

  4. The Catholic Church literally sold the forgiveness of sins. No matter what wrong you had committed, if you were rich enough you could buy your way out! Indulgences

  5. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nails the 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg, Germany. The 95 Theses was letter written to his church superiors. Martin Luther objects to sale of indulgences and comes up with 95 points of discussion By the end of 1517 thousands of copies had been printed and are spreading around Europe! The 95 Theses

  6. A Christian Revolution • Luther would benefit from a revolutionary technology: the newly invented machinery of printing. • Within three months, all Europe was awash with copies of Luther's 95 Theses.

Affects on Europe • Europe thrown into turmoil over question of religion that would last centuries. • Wars, torture, forced converts • Luther was a visionary, but he had little sympathy for other points of view. • Luther tried to convert Jews to his faith, when they didn’t convert, he wrote anti-Semitic speeches. • Thousands flee to New World in search of religious freedom. • William Penn and The Pennsylvania Experiment
