    1. Third form bonding Prepared by Alrick Moodie February 2007

    2. When atoms combine a bond is usually formed between them . Bonding is the chemical combination of atoms . Bonding happens in order for the atoms to become more stable . [ analogy of marriage ]

    3. Bonding involves electrons . When atoms bond they : transfer electrons lose electrons gain electrons share electrons There are three main types of bonding . Ionic or Electrovalent Covalent Metallic

    4. Ionic bonding is the transfer of electrons . Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons Valency is the number of unpaired (single) electrons on the outermost shell .

    5. e.g. 2,2 2,6 2,8,5

    6. Atoms with 1 , 2 , or 3 electrons in their outer shell tend to lose electrons . These are metals . Atoms with 5 , 6 , or 7 electrons in their outer shell tend to gain electrons . These are non-metals . Atoms with 8 electrons in their outer shell tend to do nothing and are inert . They are called noble gases .

    7. The aim of bonding is to get the outer shell emptied of filled . e.g. Na 2,8,1 N 2,5

    8. What do you think happens to those atoms with four electrons in their outer shell ?

    9. This is the transfer of electrons usually from a metal to a non-metal . The metal loses electrons and the non-metal gains. As a result of ionic bonding ions are formed . Ions are charged atoms . Cations are positive ions and are formed when electrons are lost . Anions are negative ions and are formed when electrons are gained . The charge on an ion is the protons electrons
