  2. 6.1 Science and the Environment • Rapid advances in science • Fundamental change in human relationship w/ environment • Global population boom • Disease, scientific innovations, and conflict led to demographic shifts.

  3. 6.2 Global Conflicts & their Consequences • Europe dominated global political order c.1900, but gave way to new forms of trans-regional political org’s by 2000 • Anti-imperialism ideologies contributed to the dissolution of empires & restructuring of states. • Pol changes accompanied by demographic & social consequences.

  4. 6.2 Global Conflicts & their Consequences • Military conflicts on an unprecedented global scale. • Although conflict dominated much of the 20th century, many individuals and groups— including states—opposed this trend. Some individuals and groups, however, intensified the conflicts.

  5. 6.3 New Conceptualizations ofGlobal Economy, Society, & Culture • States responded in a variety of ways to econ challenges of the 20th century. • New org’s for peace & cooperation (LofN, UN) • Econ Institutions (IMF, WTO, World Bank) • Humanitarian Org’s (WHO, UNICEF, Red Cross, Amnesty Internat’l) • States, communities & individ’s became increasingly interdependent, a process facilitated by the growth of internat’l org’s.

  6. 6.3 New Conceptualizations ofGlobal Economy, Society, & Culture • People conceptualized society and culture in new ways: • challenged old assumptions about race, class, gender, religion • Used new technologies to spread reconfigured traditions. • Popular and Consumer Culture became global.
