  1. T L S Focus on The Name From an Hebraic Perspective June 2, 2012

  2. Exodus • The Hebrew word from which we get the word Exodus is Shemoth • It literally means “Names” “Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.” Exodus 1:1

  3. Purpose • Uncover the original Hebraic meanings of the various names of efeithat flow out of the ancient Hebrew language of the Bible • The ancient authors of the Bible were Hebrews who lived in an Eastern Oriental culture • In order to interpret their writings appropriately, they must be understood through their culture rather than our Western culture • The modern translations, dictionaries and commentaries of the Biblical texts have interpreted the Bible through a Western perspective often ignoring the culture in which the texts were originally written

  4. There Shall Be One God “And efeishall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” Zechariah 14:9 After we complete this study and understand to read the Scripture from an Hebraic perspective, this verse will mean so much more

  5. The Pencil Eastern I write and erase words with it Western Yellow Made of wood Sharpened, lead point About 8 inches long (Verbs) (Adjectives)

  6. The Interpretation • Just as there are two major cultural approaches in the world, there are also two primary translations/interpretations occurring with the reading of every translation of the Bible • The translator (KJV, NASB, NLT, etc.) • The reader (You) • A common mistake is to allow our own interpretations to derive our understanding of Scripture

  7. Lia(ayil) To exemplify the difference of understanding of words, let’s look at Lia: a – Aleph i– Yod L- Lamed

  8. Lia(ayil) A Mighty Man An Oak Tree A Ram A Post Liais translated many different ways in Scripture

  9. Lia(ayil) “And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram (Lia) caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram (Lia), and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.” Genesis 22:13

  10. Lia(ayil) “He made also posts (Lia) of threescore cubits, even unto the post (Lia) of the court round about the gate.” Ezekiel 40:14

  11. Lia(ayil) “For they shall be ashamed of the oaks (Lia) which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.” Isaiah 1:29

  12. Lia(ayil) “Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men (Lia) of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.” Exodus 15:15

  13. Lia(ayil) • The original meaning of the word lia(ayil) is a “strong leader” • The ram is the strong leader among the flock • A post is the strong upright pillar that supports the structure • An oak tree is the hardest and strongest of the woods in the forest • The mighty men are the strong leaders of the community

  14. eLia (ayalah) “The voice of efeimakes the deer to calve” Psalm 29:9 (NASB) “The voice of efeitwists mighty oaks” Psalm 29:9 (NLT) • To the Western mind, there is no correlation • To the Eastern mind, both the deer and the oak are “strong leaders”

  15. eLia (ayalah) A more literal interpretation from Hebraic perspective would be “The voice of efeimakes the strong leaders twist” Think of an object’s function rather than it’s description

  16. Noah’s Ark If it’s a description, then what does the ark look like…? “And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. ” Genesis 6:15 Is this a function or a description?

  17. Noah’s Ark The function of the ark is to hold a great many animals to enable them to survive the flood

  18. Meanings of Names You can see examples of the meanings of names in Scripture “And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shallcomfort(Noah)us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which efeihath cursed.” Genesis 5:29

  19. Meanings of Names You can see examples of the meanings of names in Scripture “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten(cain)a man from efei.” Genesis 4:1

  20. Meanings of Names You can see examples of the meanings of names in Scripture “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed (seth) me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” Genesis 4:25

  21. Meanings of Names You can see examples of the meanings of names in Scripture “And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided (peleg); and his brother's name was Joktan.” Genesis 10:25

  22. Meanings of Names Perhaps the best one of all is found right in the beginning: “And efeiElohimformed man (adam) of the dust of the ground (adamah), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7

  23. Meanings of Names Sometimes there is more hidden than you know: From Genesis 5, the genealogy of Noah Adam – Man Jared – Comes down Seth – Appointed Enoch - Dedicate Enosh – Mortal Methuselah – His death brings Kenan – DwellingplaceLamech - Despairing Mahalalel – Light of God Noah - Comfort

  24. Meanings of Names The Gospel! Man is appointed a mortal dwelling place, but the Light of God comes down, dedicated, His death bringing the despairing comfort.

  25. The Word Name • The word “name” (shem) itself has multiple meanings based on Hebraic interpretation • Fame, famous, honor, renown, report

  26. 2nd Chronicles 2 “And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of efei, and an house for his kingdom. And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.”2ndChronicles 2:1-2

  27. 2nd Chronicles 2 “And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me. Behold, I build an house to the name of efei my Elohim, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of efeiour Elohim. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.”2ndChronicles 2:1-2

  28. The Word Name • The word “name” (shem) itself has multiple meanings based on Hebraic interpretation • Fame, famous, honor, renown, report • See the many other places in Scriptures where the Name of efei is praised! • Now you know why!!

  29. The Hebrew Alephbet and Roots • The Hebrew alephbet(alphabet) has 22 letters • Every word is formed based on two-letter parent root words • The root words are the most ancient Hebrew words and considered absolutely necessary for communication • Child roots are formed by adding “a” (aleph), “e” (hey), “f” (vav), or “i” (yod) (considered consonants in modern Hebrew)

  30. The Word Name • Following are words derived from the parent root ms(shem - name), to help us find the original Hebraic meanings of the word • The Hebrew word hmsn(neshemah) is formed by adding the h(hey) to the root word • Sidebar – The letter h was also added to Abram and Sarai (Abraham and Sarah) • Do you know why?

  31. Breath Thought, Emotion Breath can teach! “And efeiElohimformed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (neshemah) of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration (neshemah)of the Almighty giveth them understanding. ” Job 32:8

  32. Skies “In the beginning Elohimcreated the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 • The word is ems(shamah), meaning heaven, sky, or “the place of the winds” • The hmsn(neshemah)is the breath of man • The ems(shamah) is the breath of the skies “The heavens (neshemah)declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.” Psalm 97:6

  33. Dry Wind Yet another form of the root word forms the word shemam, meaning desolate “Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.” Jeremiah 12:10-11

  34. Dry Wind When dry winds blow through the desert, whatever moisture may be in/on the ground or air is dried up

  35. Shem (Name) Having looked at the words derived from the root we can determine the true meaning of the root itself Because each of the words has a sense of the word wind, we can safely determine that the meaning of the root is wind or breath

  36. Shem (Name) Name = Strength • The ms(shem - name) of a man is his breath, his essence, his character • His actions will always be related to his character • The msis the place of origin of all of a man’s actions “Save me, O Elohim, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.”Psalm 54:1

  37. Shem (Name) “Thy name, O efei, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O efei, throughout all generations.” Psalm 135:13 • The word memorial (as used here in the KJV) signifies “remembrance” • The fame of efei are His actions that will be remembered throughout all generations

  38. Shem (Name) Throne (then) vs. Seat (now) “I will declare thy name (ms - shem) unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.”Psalm 22:22 “And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.”1st Kings 1:47

  39. Names and Titles • Western thought would make “King David” a title (King) and a name (David) • The word David means “beloved” or “one who loves” • The word king (melech) means “ruler” or “one who rules” • Both of these are descriptive of David’s character • The Hebrews made no distinction between a name and a title • “King David” is Hebraicly understood as “the one who rules is the one who loves”

  40. Prayer Western thought also makes for incorrect conclusions about such things as ending a prayer with “…in the name of Jesus, Amen.” Is this supposed to be understood as a formula?

  41. Prayer “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:13 “And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.” John 16:23

  42. Prayer • Rather than being taken literally, this is meant to denote the spirit in which one prays (the same is true for “the Lord’s prayer” beginning in Matthew 6:9 – it was never meant to be prayed verbatim (and it tells you that!)) • We should be praying in the character, His character • Our prayers should be offered in the same character, spirit, conviction, faith, and purpose as His prayers (remember that His prayers invoked sweat drops of blood)

  43. There Shall Be One God “And efeishall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” Zechariah 14:9 Remember this verse from the beginning of our presentation? It has a unique ability to express the full nature and character of efei
