Idioms. An idiom is a word or phrase which means something different from what it says (Saying one thing but meaning another). Examples of Idioms. That's the way the cookie crumbles. He spilled the beans. She's the apple of his eye. The students in Class 440 are going bananas.

  1. Idioms An idiom is a word or phrase which means something different from what it says (Saying one thing but meaning another)

Examples of Idioms • That's the way the cookie crumbles. • He spilled the beans. • She's the apple of his eye. • The students in Class 440 are going bananas. • He's feeling blue today. • You're walking on thin ice mister! • Uh, oh. We're in hot water now. • Mrs. Seigel has eyes in the back of her head. • Something’s fishy here.

  3. Can YOU think of some more Idioms? • Think of some idioms that you have heard. • Write at least three idioms in your Writer’s Notebook.

Examples of idioms: • Quit beating around the bush! • In one ear and out the other • He’s always putting his foot in his mouth • It’s raining cats and dogs out there • Don’t count your chickens before their hatched. • I like to get his goat • That kid has got ants in his pants • I smell a rat.

Idiom Assignment • Choose one idiom and study its figurative and literal meaning. • Write an informative paragraph explaining its literal and figurative meaning (10 points). • On the same page as your informative paragraph, draw a picture of the idiom you chose (10 points). • **Make sure to include you idiom on your page.
