Revision of Metadata Working Group Charter: Enhancing Standards and Connections

The Metadata Working Group (MWG) has updated its charter for the first time since 2006, transitioning from an ad hoc group to a more structured entity. This revision reflects the current environment, references ISO standards, and aims to strengthen ties with other FGDC activities. Key updates include promoting training, assigning representatives to the Standards Working Group, and a new membership page. Overview • Existing Metadata Working Group (MWG) Charter • Approved in 2006 • MWG was still considered “Ad Hoc” • Focused mainly on the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata • Update MWG Charter • Reflect current environment • Reference ISO standards • Enhance connections with other FGDC activities

  3. Charter Revision Process • Nov. 2 – Using 2010 Template, sent draft to MWG members • Dec. 4 – Final draft approved by MWG • Dec. 21 – FGDC OS review • Jan. 10 – Submit to CG for review • Jan. 15 – Present to CG • Feb. 1 – CG approves final Charter

  4. Summary of Comments • 12 sets of comments • MWG members • OS staff • Editorial • Spelling and grammar • Organizational • Follow template • Add “Activities” section • Expanded content • Include new items

Key Content Changes • Kept reference to Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) – may be applicable through Platform (Pg. 1 – Purpose) • Inserted reference to support the metadata business case (Pg. 2 – Objectives) • Added assigning MWG representative to the Standards Working Group (Pg. 2 – Activities) • Added “promoting” to training bullet (Pg. 2 – Activities) • Added link to Membership page (Pg. 3 – Membership) • Noted MWG present annual summary of accomplishments and planned activities to OS & CG (Pg. 4 – Reports)

  6. Coordination Group Vote Discuss Charter ACTION: Coordination Group members are asked to send an "approve" or "disapprove" vote to Arista Maher (amaher@fgdc.gov) by COB Thursday, January 31.
