Chemical and Physical Properties and Changes
Chemical and Physical PROPERTIES • Physical Propertiesare properties that can be determined without changing its composition (colour, odour, melting point, etc.). • Chemical Propertiesare properties observed only when the substance undergoes a change in composition (combustion, rusting, reactivity with acid, etc.).
Chemical and Physical PROPERTIES Physical Properties: • Properties may include: appearance, texture, odour, taste, state, density, hardness, fusibility, melting/boiling point, boiling/condensation point, solubility, conductivity, temperature, viscosity, shape, size, lustre, malleability, optical clarity Chemical Properties: • Reactivity, combustibility, specific reactions with certain elements or compounds, resistance to change (cleaning solutions, paint stripper, etc.)
Chemical and Physical CHANGES Physical Change • The composition of the substance remains the same and no new substances are made. (Object melts, boils, conducts electricity, etc) Chemical Change • Always accompanied by a change in the starting substance and the production of one or more new substances. (A gas or precipitate is formed, colour changes, a new smell is produced, etc.)
Text Work • Use your textbook to write definitions of the properties we have listed here. (See page 180) • Pg. 182 #1 - 5 • Pg. 186 #1 - 7
