Discover Sailing Club Implementation Plan 2013 Part 8. • TITLE • Crewing • October 2013 • DATE
Implementation Plan 2013 • You should now be hearing sound – if not check your audio and ensure you are in slideshow (full-screen) mode • This is Ross Kilborn, Sport Development Director at Yachting Australia • This presentation is the 10 of 11 in the • Discover Sailing Club Implementation Plan
Why crewing ? • Crewing is probably the most common way for people to discover sailing, through a friend or family member • Crewing is probably the most cost effective way to discover sailing. Most club members do not own a boat – they crew for someone else • Crewing is very flexible – you can crew at various levels on the sailing pathway, in various roles, and supplement your sailing with courses to develop sailing skills • Crewing can be very time effective – especially after work/ twilight crewing
Crewing ….by any name ? • Keelboat or Dinghy • Racing (various levels) or social racing / cruising • Week or weekend • Twilight crewing / sailing – everything gemba said new participants want • Fun & friendly participation rather than pure “racing” • No large commitment – either membership or time • Weekdays or weekends • Adventurous but safe
How to promote crewing ? • Discover Sailing Days • Discover Sailing Experiences • Your Discover Sailing Centre / Course Instructors • Your Discover Sailing Hosts – matchmakers & mentors • Members and boat owners – word of mouth • Noticeboard • Club Website • Promote it • Registration – on line forum • Crew Matching Service • Public on line forums eg meet-up • Social media
Effective Crew Matching • The Boat Owner • Dinghy vs keel • Social vs serious • Weekends vs weekdays • Pathway level • The Potential Crew • Dinghy vs keel • Social vs serious • Weekends vs weekdays • Pathway level • Underpinned by your Discover Sailing Host • (crew matching mentor or “matchmaker”)
How do you help new crew ? • At your club • Discover Sailing Host as mentor • Educational resources on www.discoversailing.org.au • Introductory or Crew category of membership • Welcome and education nights / social invitations • On the boat • Educational resources on www.discoversailing.org.au • Introductory briefing by skipper • Clear roles • Appropriate behaviour by everyone
Crewing - Summary • Most club members don’t own a boat • Most boat owners want crew. • Significant opportunity for clubs to do it well • Future facility of Discover Sailing website - matchmaking • Twilight sailing ticks all the boxes • Sailing’s equivalent to Barefoot Bowls and Golf’s driving ranges
