  5. 3. Scientific vs. Non-Scientific Scientific Non- Scientific • Based on observable, measurable, predictable events • Myths, legends, magic • Cannot be observed, measured or predicted • Used as explanations when scientific knowledge is lacking

Pure Science vs. Technology Pure science Technology • Continue to search for scientific knowledge • Ex: scientist developing super conductors looks at the materials used to make them • Application of science • Ways to use knowledge from pure science • Ex: using superconductors to build high-speed computers

Scientific Law vs. Scientific Theory Scientific Law Scientific Theory • Summary of an observed natural event • Does not necessarily explain why or how, just tells you WHAT will happen • Serves as basis for scientific principles • Ex: Law of gravity • Ex: Laws of motion F= ma • Theories are used to explain a law • Much more than a guess! • Tries to explain WHY or HOW • Explanation that has been tested and proven manytimes (evidence that supports it) • Valid as long as no evidence disputes it • Ex: Atomic Theory
