  1. Balancing Really HardChemical Reactions

  2. TAMOBEToburen’s Algebraic Method of Balancing Equations Reactants: Zn + I2 Product: Zn I2

  3. Balancing Really Hard Equations:At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: Use TAMOBE to solve even the most difficult equations.

  4. Happy Birthday Dirge • Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, • When you’ve reached this age you know, • that the mind is first to go. • Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday!

  5. Steps to TAMOBE • Use this method for very difficult equations to balance. • Place a different letter coefficient in front of each formula on both sides of the equation. Use letters that are not commonly used in Chemistry.

  6. Example A • HCl + KMnO4 H2O + KCl + MnCl2 + Cl2 • X HCl + Y KMnO4 Z H2O + W KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2 • Complexity H, K, Mn, O, Cl

  7. X HCl + Y KMnO4 Z H2O + W KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2Eliminate H: • X = 2Z • 2Z HCl + Y KMnO4 • Z H2O + W KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2 • Eliminate K: • Y = W • 2Z HCl + W KMnO4 • Z H2O + W KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2

  8. 2Z HCl + W KMnO4 • Z H2O + W KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2 • Eliminate Mn: • W = Q • 2Z HCl + Q KMnO4 • Z H2O + Q KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2

  10.  8Q HCl + Q KMnO4 • 4Q H2O + Q KCl + Q MnCl2 + R Cl2Eliminate Cl: • 8Q = Q + 2Q + 2R • 5Q = 2R • 5/2Q = R • 8Q HCl + Q KMnO4 • 4Q H2O + Q KCl + Q MnCl2 + 5/2Q Cl2

  11. 8Q HCl + Q KMnO4 • 4Q H2O + Q KCl + Q MnCl2 + 5/2Q Cl2 Double Everything • 16Q HCl + 2Q KMnO4 • 8Q H2O + 2Q KCl + 2Q MnCl2 + 5Q Cl2 Divide Everything by Q • 16 HCl + 2 KMnO4 • 8 H2O + 2 KCl + 2 MnCl2 + 5 Cl2

  12. Example of TAMOBE B • C3H7S + O2 • CO2 + H2O + SO2 • X C3H7S + Y O2 • Z CO2 + Q H2O + R SO2

  13. Example of TAMOBE B • X C3H7S + Y O2 • Z CO2 + Q H2O + R SO2 • Complexity S, C, H, O

  17. R C3H7S + Y O2 • 3R CO2 + 7/2R H2O + R SO2 Eliminate O: 2Y = 6R + 7/2 R + 2R = 23/2 R • Y = 23/4R • R C3H7S + 23/4R O2 • 3R CO2 + 7/2R H2O + R SO2

  18. R C3H7S + 23/4R O2 • 3R CO2 + 7/2R H2O + R SO2 • Multiply Everything by 4 • 4R C3H7S + 23R O2 • 12R CO2 + 14R H2O + 4R SO2

  19. 4R C3H7S + 23R O2 • 12R CO2 + 14R H2O + 4R SO2 Divide by R  • 4 C3H7S + 23 O2 • 12 CO2 + 14 H2O + 4 SO2

  20. Interesting Signs:

  21. Balancing Really Hard Equations:Let’s see if you can: Use TAMOBE to solve even the most difficult equations.

  22. The Scientific Methodbegins with Questions about the World Around You.Ever Wonder Why?... Superman sticks out his chest to block bullets but he ducks when the gun is thrown at him?

  23. Try TAMOBE Again • As2S3 + HNO3 + H2O  • H3AsO4 + H2SO4 + NO • X As2S3 + Y HNO3 + Z H2O  • Q H3AsO4 + R H2SO4 + W NO • Complexity N, As, S, H, O

  27. “Disorder in the American Courts”These are statements people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters. ATTORNEY:  Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning? WITNESS:  Did you actually pass the bar exam?
