Daily Language Review • Using context clues: (5 min) • You can understand the meaning of words by understanding the context in which words are used.  • * First, read the sentence. • She hated feeling like a pauper, never having enough money to buy fashionable clothes or expensive  jewelry. • *Summarize the meaning. • *Define the underlined word based upon the sentence. • *Use the word in a new sentence.

Pre-reading word analysis • Turn to page 199 and scan the short story, “The Necklace.” All students are responsible for scanning. • As a group, create a chart where you write down words of choice, and rate each one as "know it," "sort of know it," or "don't know it at all.“ • On a separate sheet of paper, write a definition or "my guess on meaning" for the words you know and kind of know (NO DICTIONARIES!) • Before turning in these pre-reading charts, please know that this is not about "being right" but you are providing information to guide next steps in class vocabulary instruction.

  5. Real-Life Connection • Connect to your Life (5 minutes) • Status is defined as the standing a person has in a group to which he or she belongs.  What are some things that give a person status? How can you tell that a person has status? What are some benefits of status? What are some possible harmful effects of concern about status?

  6. Building Background • "The Necklace" takes place in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The life of a typical French woman was dictated by the income of her father or husband. • Wealthy women were upper class and lived a life of luxury. Middle-class women took care of family and home. Lower-class lived a life of poverty and hard work. • A woman could improve her status by marrying someone of a higher class, however a woman needed a dowry-(money or property) to give her new husband.

  7. Literary Analysis: Plot • The plot of a story is made up of a sequence of events or actions introducing conflicts, complications and resolution. This story is about a woman who unhappy with her social life. New conflicts take place after one conflict is resolved.
