Traditional Culture • Honor • Family is most important unit of Algerian society • Algerians view family honor as highest priority; if one person is shamed, family is shamed • Religion • 99% Islamic; 1% Christian and Jewish • Religion governs personal, political, and social life • Ties with Family honor

Impacts • Gender • Women • French wanted to “De-veil” Algerian Women • Women were inferior; not as important • Men • Men were defiant; French violated traditions of Algerians • Language • Algeria • Main language is Arabic, but many different dialects • Only 20% of all of Algeria can speak French

Impacts cont. • Identity • France tried to civilize Algeria; Educated Algerians= Berbers(European influenced);In order to be an Algerian citizen w/ French rights, Algerians had to give up their Muslim identity • Education • Originally, education for reading the Quran; with time, education turned into learning French culture(i.e. University of Algiers)
