  1. CCM Question #2 Hanah Allen

  2. The Peruvian National Park Service would like to construct an Andean Visitor Center near Lima, Peru at the Coastal Town of Callao. The construction site being considered is essentially on the coastal plain. This portion of Peru is very prone to earthquakes and tsunami. There are three site options for the visitor center on Avenue Buenos Aires. One is 5 meters above sea level near Avenue Costenara, one is 15 meters above sea level just east of Los Heros Street and the other is 20 meters above sea level near the intersection with Avenue Oscar R. Benevides. The planned structure needs to be sited in such a way that it will survive for 50 years, which is considered the life span of the building, after which it would be replaced. It turns out that other issues make constructing the building more expensive the further above sea level the building is built. Obviously, the Park Service would love to choose the site that is only 5 meters above sea level. You have been hired you to:(a) Determine the likelihood of a 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0 Richter Scale or greater earthquake that will likely generate a tsunami (called "tsunami-genetic" in any given year in coastal Peru;(b) Determine the 10 year, 50 year and 100 year return period tsunami run up heights.(c) Determine the Richer magnitude earthquake that the building would need to withstand, in order to survive for 50 years.Based upon your conclusions in the sections above, write a brief opinion and recommendation for the client.

  3. Map of the three locations being considered for the Andean Visitor Center

  4. Earthquake Intensity(Richter Scale)6.07.08.0+ Likelihood of Tsunami-genetic Earthquake in any given year 50% 33% 10% Return Period for Tsunami-genetic Earthquakes Based on 50-year return period the Visitor Center should be able to withstand an Earthquake of 8.5 on Richter Scale.

  5. Return Period for Tsunami Run-up Heights 10-Year Return Period:1.4 Meters 50-Year Return Period: 13 Meters 100-Year Return Period: 24 Meters

  6. Conclusions • The Andean Visitor Center should be constructed at Avenue Oscar R. Benevides because of its location, 20 meters from sea level. • The location 20 meters above sea level would be able to withstand a 50 year and 100 year event of tsunami run up heights. • Visitor Center should be built to withstand an earthquake of 8.5 magnitude on the Richter scale which is important because there is a chance of a major earthquake(6.0,7.0,8.0) striking this region in the next fifty years.
