  2. Slovakia-the heart of Europe The Slovak Republic came to existence on 1st January 1993 when Czechoslovakia was divided and two sovereign states were formed: The Czech Republic and The Slovak Republic

  3. Area and borders of the SR • Area: 49,039 sq km • Borders: The Czech Republic to the West Austria to the Southwest Hungary to the Southeast Poland to the North Ukraine to the East

  4. Population • 5,336,207(31 December 1994): 85.6% - Slovak 10.8% - Hungarian 3.6% - Romany, Czech, Ruthenian, Ukrainian and German

  5. Density and religion • Density: 106 inhabitants per sq km • Official language: Slovak • Main religion: Roman Catholic • Other numerous religions: Greek Catholic Evangelical Orthodox

  6. Mixture of continental and ocean climates with four seasons January-the coldest month July-the warmest month Mountainous country, 80 % of its territory being 750 m above sea level. Territory is rich in fauna and most animal species live in the mountainous woodland regions Climate

  12. History of Slovakia • The territory of the Slovak Republic has been settled since 5th century • 833 - the Great Moravian Empire was founded • 907 - Slovakia became a part of the early feudal Hungarian state • 1843- Ľ. Štúr codified the literary Slovak language

  13. History of Slovakia • August 29, 1944 - the Slovak National Uprising against the Nazi Germany • 1968 - Prague Spring led by Alexander Dubček • November 17,1989 - The Velvet Revolution, restoration of democracy • January 1,1993 - The idependence of the Slovak Republic was declared

What kind of food do people eat in Slovakia? • If you ask one hundred Slovak people to tell you one and only one Slovak traditional meal, usually at least 90 of them will say "bryndzove halusky" ("bryndzové halušky"), small dumplings made of potato dough with sheep cheese and topped with scrambled bacon ("Speck" in German).
