  2. Thesis • To mediate the force used on crowd and their dispersal. • Those who think that too much force is used. • Those who think not enough force is used. • Focused on Anglo-Saxon Western culture.

  3. Pros of more force • Safety of non hostile citizens is greater • Avoid excessive damage to private and public property • Quicker dispersal of crowd

  4. Cons of more force • Many arrests • Many unnecessary injuries, minor and major • Harming general public • Bad press for enforcers( mainly riot police)

  5. Vancouver • Vancouver, 1994 • Lost the Stanley Cup • Riot that night • Called in extra squads of Police • Dispersed in 2 Hours after the reserves arrived • Only 6 people injured and sent to hospital

  6. Occupy Movement • Davis, California 2011 • Students in Occupy Movement • Pepper Spray • Bad Press • Non violent Crowd

  7. Pros to less force • Let protesters be heard and not infringe on their rights. • Less bad press. • Less injuries due to police.

  8. Cons to less force • More potential for violence • More disturbance for people living in the area. • Higher chances for injured police • Higher cost to Tax payer

  9. Occupy Movement • 2011 • Successful in instilling new thoughts about wealth • Mostly peaceful • Voices heard

  10. London 2011 • August 2011 • Riots started after too few police were sent to enforce law • 5 days of rioting • Finished after reserves sent in and used more force • Many people hurt including 26 policemen

  17. Overall • Mediation involving the force used on crowds should be solved with new technology and more responsibility in the crowd
