This report highlights key outcomes from the collaborative efforts of SAGLC and SACOFA aimed at influencing the National Lotteries Distribution Fund and the National Development Agency. Despite initial challenges in securing interest from community grant makers, significant strides have been made in advocating for stronger participation and representation in funding processes. Lessons learned emphasize the importance of collaboration, coordination, and broader inclusion of stakeholders in enhancing funding support for civil society initiatives.

However… • No initial interest was shown to work together with community grant makers • We were seen as intermediaries who harness money • Political influence
Ideally • We would like • Because • The Lottery and government agencies to use grant makers to assist them in the development process • Allow for a strong representation on their boards to drive the sector in our country. • Represent huge groups of grantees • Stronger administratively • Access to international funding
Accomplished • Various meetings held with organisations with vested interest • Approached stronger institutions for assistance • Broadened the sphere of influence by taking bigger grant makers on board
Lessons learnt… • More coordination of the process • Include larger and stronger groups • Assist with wider funding support
Lessons learnt con… • Guard against self interest • Take time to negotiate • Not lessening the importance and commitment to the process • Manner in which we partner • Provide proper mandates • Larger organisations should not only look at own interest
What next… • Engage in better coordinated process • Work with academia to be able to deliver better research material • Strengthen Civil Society to participate.
