What MRGS does for you • Supervision training (together with faculties) • Administrative matters relating to your students (you can seek advice) • Thesis examination • On-line candidature and scholarship application site; provision of information about eligibility for candidature / scholarships • Many services for your students - Special grants (eg. student travel) - exPERT seminars

Supervisor Accreditation and Training Why do I need to undertake training ? • All main (or sole) supervisors of research masters and doctoral students at Monash University must be accredited otherwise they can only be an associate supervisor • Student dissatisfaction, complaints or grievances commonly relate to the quality of supervision

  7. Two Research Supervision Training Models • The apprenticeship model: trainee supervisors undertake the role of associate supervisor for the duration (admission to award of degree) of a doctoral candidature • The MRGS training model: trainee supervisors undertake a series of workshop modules and master class seminars

  8. The MRGS Training Model • One day workshop (or two half days) allows completion of most of nine modules required for level 1 accreditation (next session - Thurs 28 April ) and • Additional experiences including a doctoral examination advisory panel • Completion of 5 master class seminars for level 2 accreditation

  9. How many students can I supervise ? • Unaccredited; associate only (max 25%) 1 EFTSL or 3 students • Level 1; associate / main (up to 100%) 4 EFTSL or 6 students • Level 2; associate / main (up to 100%) 8 EFTSL or 12 students

  10. What if I am already an experienced supervisor ? • Experienced supervisors can request exemption from level 1 and/or level 2 training • If exemption is granted we still ask for two “Monash” modules to be completed - #1 Policy (on-line) and #8 Examinations • The exemption form is available on the MRGS website
