Buddhism Confucianism • Brought to China from India about A.D. 150 • Taught that people could escape from suffering • Many buddhists became nuns and monks • Monasteries and temples ran schools, provided rooms and food for travelers and medical care • Based on sayings of Confucius • People need to have a sense of duty • Rulers should set good examples • All men with a talent for governing should take part in government

  3. Neo-Confucianism • Supported by Tang and Song rulers • Life in this world as important as the afterlife • More than a system of rules for being good • People could find peace and live in harmony with nature.
