“Take a Walk” The Crucible
Procedure • When I say, “Take a Walk,” walk at a normal pace in a random and diverging path around the room without running into each other. • I will give you directions by announcing the number of people in a group and what “scene” you are to create. (For example, group of 2; a family eating dinner.) • Form groups with people right around you, ensuring that everyone is in a group, even if you have to have an extra person. Quickly, discuss the scene and form a “freeze frame” of the scene. • After about a minute, I will countdown from 5 to let you know it’s time to freeze. • Sometimes I will ask others to interpret your group’s scene while you are frozen. Sometimes I might ask you questions about your scene. Stay in character throughout the scene and interviews.
Things to Consider • Character motivation, thoughts, conflicts • Themes • Symbolism • Body language and facial expression • Be prepared to cite evidence. • Be creative. Imagine the scene and try to portray it with as much depth as possible. Every scene/character doesn’t have to be rigidly faithful to the script. You can have characters who represent the angel/devil on the shoulder, people who represent objects, etc. • Some the scenes I will call out are not actually in the play. You will have to imagine what the scene would be like if it were included. • Don’t just focus on the main characters. Who else would be there? What might he/she/they be feeling or doing?
