When you compose an answer to a writing prompt in which you are asked to analyze a piece of literature, you should always have a Point (topic sentence), an Illustration (an example from the text), and an Explanation (your own analysis of that example and how it relates to the topic sentence). P. I. E.

  3. So, if I asked you … What would you do? P. I. E. How does Dr. King use logos to convey his message?

  4. In the art of rhetoric, logos appeals to the audience’s sense of logic and reasoning. Dr. King appeals to his audience’s sense of logic when he makes the statement, “And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted the citizenship rights” (2). Almost a threat, this statement appeals to the people’s reasoning of equality, and it shows that things will only get worse if a change is not made. This use of logical fear helped King to persuade his audience to not only let change happen, but to help it happen. P. I. E.
