  1. WRITING AN ESSAY IS AS EASY AS BAKING A CAKE! Are you up for the challenge? Careful….this may make you hungry!

  2. The Baking Process = The Writing Process • Pre-Heating the Oven = Pre-Writing • Mixing the Ingredients = Rough Draft, Editing, Revising • Icing the Cake = Publishing a Final Copy

  3. Parts of the Cake = Parts of the Essay Introduction Paragraph = Dry Cake Mix • The dry cake mix is the base of the recipe just like the opening paragraph is the base of the essay. Just as the cake mix determines the flavor and color of the cake, the opening paragraph helps the reader determine the topic and purpose of your essay. • Remember, a boring introduction would be like choosing a cake mix with a boring flavor. Why have plain white or plain chocolate cake when you could have double fudge nut cake? Catch your readers’ and eaters’ attention!

  4. Parts of the Cake = Parts of the Essay Body Paragraphs = Eggs, Oil, Water • All of the ingredients support the mix just as the supporting paragraphs and details support the main idea of the essay. Without all three ingredients the cake wouldn’t turn out right. Without all three supporting paragraphs your essay wouldn’t turn out right. Sometimes we add extra ingredients like chocolate chips, nuts, or fruit to our cake mix. It’s also okay to add more body paragraphs and it’s important to add lots of details, and figurative language where appropriate. These additional ingredients only make the cake and the essay more special.

  5. Parts of the Cake = Parts of the Essay Conclusion Paragraph = Icing • To top off your cake add icing, and to top off your essay add a conclusion. A boring conclusion would be like choosing plain vanilla icing when you could have Fun-Fetti icing, or caramel nut icing. Your conclusion should make your readers remember your essay, just as the icing should make your eater remember your cake!

  6. Parts of the Cake = Parts of the Essay Milk = Title • Who wants cake without milk? Don’t forget to add a big glass of milk to your dessert and don’t forget to add a title to your essay!

  7. ARE YOU HUNGRY YET? MRS. COSGRAVE IS HUNGRY FOR SOME AWESOME ESSAYS!
