  1. Design and development of solar power-assisted manual/electric wheelchair Chi-Sheng Chien, MD; Tung-Yung Huang, PhD; Tze-Yuan Liao, PhD; Tsung-Yuan Kuo, PhD; Tzer-Min Lee, MD

  2. Aim • Develop wheelchair with user-selectable manual/ electric propulsion mode and auxiliary solar power supply system. • Relevance • Hybrid manual/electric wheelchair would allow user to strengthen cardiopulmonary functions while reducing shoulder injuries due to long-term manual propulsion.

  3. Method • Used quality function deployment approach to translate customer needs into design requirements. • Designed manual/electric hybrid wheelchair that allowed user to switch between manual and electric modes. • Equipped wheelchair with solar panel to improve wheelchair range and battery efficiency.

  4. Results • Auxiliary solar power supply increased travel range by ~26%. • Compared with battery-powered wheelchair. • Wheelchair’s modular design allowed disassembly and folding for easy transportation and storage.

  5. Conclusion • Proposed wheelchair effectively and conveniently met the mobility needs of individuals with mobility difficulties.
