Formative Assessment: • A check for understanding • An assessment FOR learning • Conducted throughout the instruction cycle • Can be formal or informal • Supports learning during the learning process • Ex: Driving with a teenage as they learn to drive (formative) v. the driving test (summative)

  5. Assessments themselves are not summative or formative. What distinguishes them as summative or formative is HOW and WHEN you use the data.

  7. When Do You Use FA? • Daily checks for understanding  daily re-teaching • On-going • More frequent=greater impact on learning • WELL before the summative assessment
