  5. FAMILY BACKGROUND: The youngest of three children, Rachel Carson had a rugged upbringing in a simple farmhouse outside the western Pennsylvania river town of Springdale. She credited her mother with introducing her to the world of nature that became her lifelong passion. Rachel Carson
