Harry Coumnas Helps Design Many Types of Research Studies Conducted in Space as Mission Specialist Harry Coumnas, a mission specialist, coordinates operations within the spacecraft and serves in a role that requires the management of everyday tasks necessary to keep a spacecraft functional and livable by the inhabitants. As a mission specialist, he schedules the activities of the crew, monitors the technological systems on the spacecraft and manages inventory, including beverages and food. As a mission specialist, he considers it his responsibility to perform research activities as these are integral to the research work being done by many scientists. Working with scientists, he helps design many types of research studies conducted in space. Furthermore, he consults with astronauts on how to overcome various challenges of astronauts in space, and helps them find solutions and opportunities posed by the environment of the space station. As a renowned astronaut, Harry Coumnas makes it through the physical demands of space travel. He cites that it is not easy to live in close quarters with virtual strangers for three to six months or more. He has to cope with the long periods away from home during training. Besides, he has to travel to practice with international mission partners. Harry Coumnas has lived and worked on the shuttle for days at a time. He has carefully checked all systems before finally releasing a satellite into Earth orbit. According to him, Research that benefits our lives on Earth has been performed inside the Space Shuttle and Space Station.
