  2. Think of the ideas in your paragraph as cycles. Make a statement = Topic sentence 1 Relate the example. ¶ 4 2 Explain it. 3 Give an Example.

  3. Cycle of Development 1 What is your point? How does your example relate to the topic? ¶ What do you mean by that? 4 2 W W W W H? 3 Can you give an example?

  4. Compare / ContrastEsperanza and Rachel • Both Esperanza and Rachel describe how they do not like something about their life. 1 Make a statement = Topic sentence

  5. 2 Explain it. What do you mean by that? They both explain to the reader how they do not like something within themselves and want to change it.

  6. 3 Example — Can you give an example ? For example, Esperanza says she would like to change her name to Zeze the X. This shows that Esperanza is very unhappy with her name. Rachel also explains how she does not like something. For example, she continues to wish that she were older than eleven. You can tell by the tone in that particular part of the story that she does not like her age.

  7. 4 Relate the example. How does your example relate to the topic? These characters are both not satisfied with something and have a self vs. self conflict.
