  1. GIS in K-12: why, how, and when to use GIS in Education Presented by Jung Lee, Ph. D Richard Stockton College of NJ leej@loki.stockton.edu April 16, 2001

  2. GIS on the Internet • Sydney Interactive Map • http://citymap.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/ • National Geographic Map Machine • http://www.nationalgeographic.com/maps/index.html • ATM Locator • http://www.visa.com • Store Locator • http://www.godiva.com

  3. What do you think GIS is?

  4. What is GIS? • A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based system for capturing, mapping, manipulating, analyzing and visualizing geographically referenced information. • Layers of information about a place (http://www.gis.com) (from: GIS, http://www.gis.com/)

  5. What is GIS? (continued) • Linking a database to the map (from: GIS, http://www.gis.com/)

  6. What is GIS? (continued) • Components Location, Data, Hardware, Software, People, Information (from: GIS, http://www.gis.com/)

  7. What is GIS (continued) • GIS in Everyday Life • http://www.esri.com/geography/gis_touches/everyday.html

  8. Do you want your students to: • engage in activities that improve critical thinking and problem solving skills? • integrate knowledge from multiple subjects? • build a rich grasp of global topics? • work on community-based investigations? • use the same advanced technology employed by business and government? • be ready to step into the information rich society? (from: ESRI Schools & Libraries, http://www.esri.com/industries/k-12/roadmap.html, GIS - A Thinker's Tool)

  9. Case Studies & Lesson Plans EdPARC http://nasc.uwyo.edu/edParc/default.htm ArcLessons http://gis.esri.com/industries/k-12/arclessons/arclessons.cfm Food insecurity and vulnerability information and mapping systems (FIVIMS) http://www.fivims.net/ Your task: Find a lesson plan related to your subject and explain it to the class.

  10. With GIS, students should: • take an active role • work with an authentic problem • analyze how one factor relates to other conditions of a given place • apply similar features in other places • synthesize their findings • evaluate or predict a problem

  11. With GIS, teachers should: • ask to add new data • give an authentic problem • ask “what if” • give a scenario • have students interpret the mapping information they displayed • provide an assessment tool for their project

  12. Critical questions to carry a GIS project • What should be answered (determined)? • What types of data must be collected? • How are the data collected? • How are the data visualized? • How are the data used to make decisions?

  13. Your task: a GIS lesson plan • As a group, develop a GIS lesson plan related with your subject matters • Plan to develop a series of maps • Scratch a series of maps on the file I gave to you • Let’s talk about your lesson plan and its instructional values

  14. Limitations • Not easy to learn the GIS software • Budget for the hardware and software • Curriculum integration: teachers’ collaboration

  15. General resources: Websites • GIS Info: http://www.gis.com • ESRI: http://www.esri.com/
