  2. Benjamin’s Early Years • Born November 9 1731 • Free born descendent of slaves • Grew up on a rural tobacco farm in Maryland • Attended school, but mainly self taught

  3. Benjamin's Later Years • Work with Andrew Ellicott doing surveying • Calculated the occurrences of solar and lunar eclipse • Died in October 1806

  4. Contributions to Mathematics • First African American mathematician • Trained himself to calculate positions of the sun, moon, stars, for each day of the year • At 24, Benjamin constructed his own clock from wood • Published almanacs every year from 1792 to 1797

  5. Contributions Continued • He predicted solar and lunar eclipses • Did work with surveying because of his immense knowledge of time and position of stars • Interacted with Thomas Jefferson to plead for justice from slavery
